Our Breeding Process

At New Age Seeds, we employ a meticulous breeding process to create soybean varieties that excel in both quality and agronomic performance.

Objectives

We aim to develop high-yielding soybean varieties that meet the Soy Food industry’s processing requirements, such as higher protein levels, larger seed size, and desirable taste. Our breeding program focuses on these traits to ensure our varieties meet the highest standards.

Cross Pollination

Although soybeans are naturally self-pollinating, we manually transfer pollen from one parent plant to another to create the F1 generation. This process ensures the development of new, high-potential varieties.

Progeny Selection

We plant F1-F4 generations in a winter nursery to accelerate growth. At F4-F5, we select plants with excellent traits and desired maturity, then test them in Ontario for stability and uniformity. This rigorous process takes 6+ years from cross to final variety.

Backcrossing

We use backcrossing to transfer specific traits, such as disease resistance, into our varieties while retaining their desirable qualities. This process typically involves three generations and final testing.

Recurrent Selection

To introduce new traits, such as herbicide resistance, we use recurrent selection, ensuring that the original parent’s agronomic characteristics are preserved.

Variety Testing

New varieties undergo at least two years of testing in various locations to evaluate yield potential and stability. This process involves multiple test sites and repetitions to ensure the variety’s adaptability and performance.

Variety Release

After final testing and seed multiplication, we conduct public trials before officially releasing a new variety. Only when we are confident in its performance and quality is it given a marketing number and made available for sale.

Don McClure, founder of New Age Seeds, has dedicated his career to advancing soybean breeding, focusing on conventional varieties for the Soy Food industry. With a background in agriculture and genetics from the University of Guelph and a distinguished career at Syngenta Seeds, he founded New Age Seeds in 2016 to address gaps left by public programs and multinational companies. McClure has developed notable varieties like S21-N6, S03-W4, and S007-Y4, setting industry standards and shaping the future of soybean breeding.
